ABOUT

Gretchen is a multimedia journalist who has reported and produced stories on topics like deep sea mining, plastic waste, cancer, women's health, poverty, and artificial intelligence in the medical field. Before pivoting to health and science coverage she worked as an entertainment writer, where she interviewed artists of color like Michelle Yeoh, Margaret Cho, Uzo Aduba, and BTS

Gretchen earned her M.A. in Journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY in December 2023. While in grad school, she was the president of the Newmark chapter of AAJA (the Asian American Journalists Association) and the vice president of the Newmark chapter of NLGJA (association of LGBTQ+ journalists). She held various events on campus, including organizing and moderating a panel about how to sensitively cover Asian issues with WNYC senior reporter Arun Venugopal and CUNY professor and Markup reporter Lam Thuy Vo.

While growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, she was steeped in the values of community service and environmental stewardship, spending her weekends cooking at soup kitchens with her mom and doing coastal cleanups with her dad. As a kid, she dreamed of being an astronaut and a rainforest scientist, and now she uses her reporting to encourage curiosity in and empathy for the world and people around us. Focusing on how various issues affect marginalized groups will always be at the core of her reporting.

In her spare time, Gretchen enjoys rock climbing, talking about horror films, and working through her ever-growing Google Maps list of best coffee shops and bakeries with friends.
